Mildred and Maud are sent on work experience to Cosie's cafe, which they are looking forward to, until they discover that Ethel and Drusilla are also doing work experience there. For the same weekend, the rest of the third years are subjected to Miss Drill's outdoor survival training.
Mrs Cosie leaves the girls in charge of the cafe while she goes to the doctor's, and Ethel, being Ethel, takes charge of everyone, and everyone grumbles about how she's not pitching in to help clean up. Ethel then takes the opportunity to transform the cafe from an old-fashioned tea shop into a modern French Patisserie. A group of Japanese tourists show up; Ethel magics up some food for the tourists, and keeps bossing everyone around.
All seems to go well until the Grand Wizard arrives with Baz and Gaz and demands a traditional English tea. Hellibore wants cream tea, but Ethel tries to give him some foreign, chocolaty pastry. Much to his chagrin, the tour group snaps about a million pictures of him in the process.
Miss Hardbroom, meanwhile, lures Miss Cackle off in the direction of the tearoom with the promise of cheesecake if she performs a surprise inspection. Ruby and Jadu get awfully tired of Miss Drill's assault course through the forest and plan to sneak away. Unfortunately, before they can recruit Enid to go with them, she falls in the river. Ruby and Jadu arrive at Cosie's to discover chaos has developed between the angry customers and the girls.
Hellibore has sent Baz and Gaz into the kitchen to see what's taking so long with his cream tea. The girls are having a food fight in the kitchen with the wizards, and the cafe is full of angry Japanese tourists demanding a traditional English tea- and Miss Cackle and Miss Hardbroom are on their way to the cafe!
Meanwhile, Miss Cackle and Miss Hardbroom find out that Ruby and Jadu went missing, and anticipate finding them at the tearoom. Mrs Cosie returns and orders everything to be put right, which the girls do just in time for Miss Cackle and Miss Hardbroom's arrival. Miss Hadbroom and Miss Cackle show up, and Mrs Cosie doesn't say a word about all the magic.
